Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has been functional from the very inception of the hospital, which was essentially started as a hospital for women and children in the year 1893. The department is recognized for training post-graduate students for DNB in OBG, since the year 2007.

Outpatient services:
  • Monday to Friday: 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM
  • Saturdays: 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM
  • Evening Clinics: (Mondays to Fridays): 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM

The consultation charges for the evening clinics are more compared to the regular clinics

The specialty clinics

Antenatal clinic and high risk pregnancy clinic:

Available on all working days. High risk pregnancies are seen by consultants on priority on speci ed days

General gynaecology:

Available on all working days: This clinic caters to the needs of women who have problems related to menstruation, pelvic pain, vaginal discharge, breast problems, etc.

Oncology services:

Available on all working days. Cancer screening programs, including cytology, colposcopy, and endometrial sampling are provided on an outpatient basis. Conservative and radical surgeries for cancer are performed by open and laparoscopic methods.

Family planning services:

Available on all working days. The hospital provides contraceptives - condoms, copper T, and oral contraceptive pills - free of cost. Tubectomy operations are conducted following delivery and a Caesarean section. Laparoscopic tubal ligation is done for those opting for the procedure at interval times.

Infertility services:

Preliminary consultation, baseline investigations and counselling are available on everyday basis. Ovulation induction and intra uterine inseminations have helped achieve pregnancies in innumerable women. Recanalization operation following prior tubal ligation is also performed.

Inpatient services:

The maternity unit and labour ward:

The maternity unit and the labour ward on the 3rd oor are open 24 hours, with an in-house doctor on duty, to receive any woman coming in labour or other emergencies.

Facilities available in the Labour Room:
  • Electronic fetal monitoring
  • Central oxygen and suction
  • Ultrasound scan machine and Boyle's apparatus.
  • Epidural analgesia for painless labour is provided on request.
  • The department promotes and permits a birth companion during labour, if so desired.
The High Dependency Unit:

This ward is specially meant to care for high-risk pregnant women. It has a facility for non-invasive BP monitoring, cardiac monitors, and oxygen lines. Those women with hypertensive disorders, convulsions, heart disease, severe anaemia, and other medical problems, are admitted into this ward for close supervision and care.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit:

The neonatal intensive care unit caters to the immediate needs of the newborns. It is equipped with a ventilator and a C-PAP facility.

Wards:

Different categories of beds - executive, private, semi-private and general - are available to meet the needs of different strata of patients.
